JCRC, Kabale, Uganda

The Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) in Kabale, Uganda is one of eight Regional Centres of excellence of JCRC. It was founded in 2002 and is part of the partnership between the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Defence. The clinic is affiliated with Makerere University and receives support from both government and private resources, including the Rockefeller Foundation. There are currently 17 members of staff and volunteers working at the clinic.

The clinic treats patients with HIV and related infectious diseases. As of the 1st of January 2011, there were approximately 2340 HIV positive patients on follow-up in this clinic, of whom approximately 2200 patients are currently on first-line treatment, and approximately 140 patients have been started on second-line therapy.

The site is experienced in clinical research and has participated in numerous trials including paediatric and cancer studies. The key EARNEST site personnel are Prof. Peter Mugyenyi (PI), Dr. Hillary Alima (Co-PI) and Agatha Nshabohurira (Trial manager) and these are ably supported by a comprehensive and enthusiastic team.
