MzuzuCentral Hospital is a referral hospital comprising of several departments, including the Rainbow Clinic which founded in 2004, is the first ART clinic in the Northern Malawi. It is supported by the Malawian government and has currently 19 members of staff and volunteers.
The clinic treats patients with HIV and related infectious diseases. As of the 1st of January 2011, there were approximately 8700 HIV positive patients registered, of whom approximately 3900 patients are currently on first-line treatment, and approximately 90 patients have been started on second-line therapy.
MzuzuCentral Hospitalhas some experience in clinical research, particularly in the field of Ophthalmology. The key EARNEST site personnel are Rose Nyirenda (PI), Dr. Romain Mbiya (Co-PI), and Clement Mtika (Trial manager) and these are ably supported by a comprehensive and enthusiastic team.
