Resistance Substudy

Patients failing first-line therapy often have extensive mutations to NNRTI and NRTI-based regimens. Although the pattern of resistance has been relatively well characterised in resource-rich settings where resistance testing is performed as a routine at the time of first-line failure, there is relatively little data on the pattern of resistance mutations in a large cohort of African patients failing first-line therapy.

The aims of the substudy are hence to characterise the prevalence of isolated and clustered resistance mutations at the time of failing first-line ART and to determine the clinical, demographic and laboratory associations with particular resistance mutations. All sites are participating in this substudy, but only a subset of trial participants are included in the analysis.
